Author Commentary: A Profile of Dacarra Abernathy | Joseph J. Washington | BAD AFRIKA

Inside the RAYNMEN universe, no character exists by accident. Every life has weight. Every choice leaves a mark. Dacarra Abernathy is one of those characters.

In a lesser story, he might have been a minor player, a device to move the plot from one moment to the next. But Dacarra was never meant to be a footnote. He may be born from imagination, yet to me, he feels as real as faith.

He matters. His story matters. And with seven more novels still ahead, we are only beginning to discover how deeply he will shape the world of RAYNMEN.

The Twenty-Seven Chapters That Changed Everything

I did a commentary on upending the entire novel — adding twenty-seven brand-new chapters to a book finally finished after five years' development. Dacarra is one of many characters whose life and story were upended by this massive shift. Before it, he was just a twitchy intern irritating his superior, Rayner Darwin: a fresh Ph.D. with a bright future, until the FEONA Tower explosion reduced his life to rubble.

By nature, his story couldn't end in Chapter 1, but his survival stayed ambiguous for chapters, then indefinitely through Book One. By draft's end, his trajectory was set — with a reintroduction TBD for sequels.

Yet with those twenty-seven new chapters, his thematic weight grew unknowingly. As I drafted them, Dacarra became an afterthought.

Then, rewriting the first twenty-seven: there he was. Chapter twenty-five.

"Morning, Dr. Darwin. We've got a few arrivals for you today."

 "Do we."

She checked her list. "Waltman, Giles, Abernathy."

From Attempted Assassin to Unlikely Savior

The original draft of the book showed Dacarra attempting to assassinate Rayner with no explanation as to why.

"Dacarra stood there, hand trembling. The revolver heavy.

 "You? They sent you?"

"I don't want to. But I have to."

Dacarra evolved from a possible support character to a necessary juxtaposition to Rayner's terrifying realization of what he has created — and the knowledge that he is being hunted.

In this, Rayner's only clue is his would-be assassin, who immediately becomes his unlikely savior. Rayner has to reconcile two conflicting ideas at once about one person.

In Chapter Forty, Rayner and Dacarra escape the explosion's aftermath, leaving Elaine Kravitz behind — believing her to be dead.

"He was furious with the man who had almost killed him. Yet, a gnawing feeling told him not to leave Abernathy."

Moments later:

"He considered turning himself in. But there were forces at play he couldn't name. Bigger than him.

He needed answers. He was sitting on his first clue.

Rayner darted into the driver's seat and slammed the door. He grabbed Dacarra by the collar and shook him violently.

"Who sent you?!" Rayner slapped him. "Wake up! WHO SENT YOU?! Who wants me dead?!"

Dacarra didn't respond. Drifting. Losing blood fast from the gunshot wound. Teetering close to death."

Chapter Thirty-Four: The Morning Before the Explosion

In the redrafting of Book One, I not only added the twenty-seven chapters but five more before what was the original Chapter One — now Chapter Thirty-Three — and two after. In those additional five chapters is Chapter Thirty-Four.

Chapter Thirty-Four is a whole chapter that shows you exactly why Dacarra tries to kill Rayner the morning of the explosion, before he went to work.

By Chapter Forty-One, Dacarra disappears from the narrative entirely.

 "Silence.

The rider stayed crouched. Head down, knees bent, katana tucked close.

Dacarra accidentally shifted his foot slightly.

 Crunch.

 The rider's head snapped up.

 Eyes locked onto him."

Who Is Dacarra Abernathy? — RAYNMEN Lore Profile

Dacarra Abernathy starts as a bright young PhD intern at FEONA Therapeutics, specializing in systems modeling for neural interfaces. Recruited amid corporate expansion, he's earnest and eager, assisting Rayner Darwin on the secretive FEONA project.

Coerced by shadowy operatives holding his family hostage, he reluctantly attempts to assassinate Rayner with a revolver — but the FEONA Tower explosion interrupts, enhancing him with botanical manipulation: accelerating plant growth, integrating vines into his body, and turning him into a living green force. He saves Rayner (and Elaine Kravitz) during the chaos, diving into chemical tanks and disposal systems to escape.

Now a key Sea Haven resistance member, his non-combat powers support research and defenses — like overgrowing the abandoned district he hid in. Haunted by his near-betrayal, he aids Rayner's Veylan Index probe while grappling with his volatile abilities.
